The BOLD Awards 2016 Finalists

The finalists are officially in! It's been exciting working with Aquicore, Enlighted, View, and a panel of rockstar judges to honor Building Optimizers, Leaders, and Disruptors who push boundaries and transform the way we use technology in the built environment.

The BOLD Awards recognizes real estate leaders in four main categories: The Mentor, The Innovator, The Champion, and The Unsung Hero. Twenty finalists were selected based on their innovation, human impact, and environmental impact. The judging panel will be voting for the winner in each of the four categories, but the final award, The People’s Choice Award, will be chosen by you! Vote for your favorite finalist by October 4th for their chance to win.  

The Mentor

SYLVIA GOLISANO
ENERGY & SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR - GRANITE PROPERTIES

Sylvia is the leader of sustainability at Granite Properties and sits on a number of boards including the 2030 Districts Dallas. Sylvia is a LEED Associate and has been integral in helping Granite Properties improve efficiency of the buildings their portfolio. She's also highly respected within the sustainability world of CRE.

MICHAEL GIBEAU
REGIONAL MANAGER - MRP REALTY

In 2016 Mike and his team have expanded into new markets, including Philadelphia and have been recognized by BOMA with their Outstanding Building of the Year for Renovation with Bethesda Crossing. Mike is an outstanding leader and mentor with his team and with his customers and partners.

CHRISTY MEANS
MANAGING DIRECTOR OF PROPERTY MANAGEMENT - STREAM REALTY PARTNERS

Christy oversee's Property Management for the Dallas Forth Worth portfolio of Stream Realty Partners. Christy see's the value in providing solutions to her customers and teams that allow them to be more efficient. Christy has been instrumental into the explosive growth of the DFW area. She's involved in several regional and national associations and is respected amongst her peers.

STEVE HARRISON
DIRECTOR OF FACILITIES AND SUSTAINABILITY - PARMENTER

Steve Harrison centralized Energy Management across buildings throughout the southeast and southwest. He Leads from the front in adding technology to enable his engineers. Centralized Energy Management across Portfolio of 20 Class A buildings to lower consumption.

The Innovator

MATT MACKO
FOUNDER - STOK

Matt's restructuring of the sustainable real estate consulting firm (EBS) he founded in 2008 was done so to solve some of business' most pressing environmental and social problems. The firm formerly known as EBS is now stok. After launching stok this year the organization has become a certified B Corp and achieved JUST certification from the International Living future Institute.  Among other issues that exist in business, the gender pay gap is one the new organizational structure at stok is aiming to solve.

NOEL MAXAM
CEO, CO-FOUNDER - EMAGISPACE

Noel Maxam spearheaded the creation of a more efficient, reusable, and sustainable building block technology. Convincing unions, architects, construction foreman and finish carpenters to think about building walls without 2X4's and drywall has been an exciting challenge. In the last year, Noel has been demonstrating to some of the largest construction companies, entertainment studios and art galleries in the U.S. that Emagispace's disruptive technology is evolving to be better option for sustainable interior construction and design.

JEFFREY PROST-GREENE
CO-FOUNDER, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS - UP TOP ACRES

Jeffrey deserves a BOLD award for innovation in reusing an existing building's green roof and converting it to a roof farm to table roof using new design strategy, technology and construction to address how the roof at Half Street can easily be transformed by urban agriculture into a resource for local restaurants.

PETER RUMSEY
FOUNDER AND CEO - POINT ENERGY INNOVATIONS

When Rocky Mountain Institute settled into its new Basalt, CO Office at the beginning of 2016,  Peter’s first major installation of the Hyperchair was keeping each individual staff member comfortable in a building without a central heating system! While avoiding the two biggest, and often simultaneous complaints in buildings, “I’m too cold!” and “I’m too hot!”, the chairs provide a tiny extra boost of heat (or cooling), fine-tuned to personal needs, for a fraction of the environmental cost of central heating.

HARRY SIM
CEO - CYPRESS ENVIROSYSTEMS

Harry has been an industry leader in addressing the needs of existing buildings. With the Wireless Pneumatic Thermostat, he proved how non-invasive retrofits can drastically reduce costs and make it possible for all buildings to cost-effectively modernize. By developing and introducing SMARTPneumatics in 2016, he has shown that the performance of older buildings can be further optimized and approach that of new buildings. His inventions have already made thousands of buildings more efficient and SMARTPneumatics will allow them to make further reductions in their environmental impact.

The Champion

EUGENIA GREGORIO  
VICE PRESIDENT OF STRATEGY & SUSTAINABILITY - THE TOWER COMPANIES

In 2016, Eugenia led the Tower Team to receive a number of awards and recognitions for their leadership in the real estate industry including BOMA's 2016 Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) Earth award and the Regional Grand TOBY award (1909 K Street), 1st office building in the world to achieve LEED Gold Re-certification under LEED O+M: Existing Building v4 (1828 L Street), and the Largest office building in the National Capitol Region to be awarded LEED recertification using LEED Dynamic Plaque (1707 L Street). She also worked on a number of industry case studies this year including a new initiative with the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) and Aquicore to conduct a pilot project and publish a case study entitled "Increasing Tenant Engagement through Plug Load Management".

AARON BINKLEY
DIRECTOR OF SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMS - DIGITAL REALTY

Aaron has completely transformed the way Digital Realty, which owns data centers in 14 countries, does their business, and is transforming the entire data center industry as a result.  Data centers are typically not known for being proactive on sustainability, but Aaron is changing that single handedly, and has solidified his place as an industry disruptor. He created the first data center green bond and the first data center offsite Power Purchase Agreement in 2016.

JESSICA DIAZ-AVELAR
ENVIRONMENTAL RISK MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY DIRECTOR - PYSIR AND PGIM'S LATAM SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTANT

Jessica Diaz Avelar created Smart Blue a proprietary environmental management and green building certification platform for emerging the Mexico markets to prepare our Prudential Global Investment Management (PGIM) assets for a future third-party certification, such as LEED, as the demand for green buildings in emerging markets matures. SMART Blue has certified 9 buildings totaling 151, 417 square meters of building area. During 2015 alone, more than 900 professionals were trained in different SMART Blue sustainable areas. SMART blue has produced an annual per project of 5% energy reduction, 500 m3 of water and incorporated 127 tons of recycled steel and diverted more than 20.8 tons of material from landfills.

AMANDA STURGEON
CEO - INTERNATIONAL LIVING FUTURE INSTITUTE

In 2016, Amanda took the reigns as CEO of the Living Future Institute -- the organization that operates the Living Building Challenge. Under her leadership the Institute has expanded quickly into the commercial real estate market and is greatly expanding the type and number of projects that are able to achieve the Living Building Challenge. The program has scaled up quickly from the landmark, 50,000 square foot Bullit center, to include the 200,000 square foot Etsy Headquarters, and a number of million square foot plus corporate campuses both in the US and internationally.

RENEE LOVELAND
DIRECTOR OF SUSTAINABILITY - GERDING EDLEN

Renee's has an unwavering focus on sustainability metrics and reporting; she is a co-creater of Gerding Edlen’s Livable Place Index and manages the firm’s GRESB and B Corp certifications. Renee revamped an existing approach to data collection to now include the installation of web-enabled hardware and cloud-software to obtain real-time utility data on properties across Gerding Edlen’s equity fund portfolios. Her comprehensive approach to sustainable management and operations includes advocating for investing funds into various technological platforms designed to improve building performance and make that information available to occupants, owners and investors.

The Unsung Hero

JOSH CLYBURN
PROJECT MANAGER - NYSERDA

Josh is leading the first of its kind rebate program focused on operational improvement and behavioral change through data-driven decisions. He is actively engaged with service providers, owners and managers to make sure this program is a success. With over $46 million allocated to his newly designed Real Time Energy Management program, Josh is spending most of his time qualifying providers, collaborating with stakeholders, and analyzing market trends. He is the unsung hero who has figured out a way to effectively work with with service providers and bridge the financial gap for owners and operators in acquiring new kinds of services.

KEVIN DEVINE
DIRECTOR ENGINEERING SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGION - BROOKFIELD  

Kevin oversees 80 engineers in the western region that are responsible for operating 8 million sf of commercial office space. Through training, implementing energy conservation programs, and partnering with vendors Kevin ensures all engineers receive hands on training in the latest technology and energy savings programs to operate high-rise buildings efficiently to reduce the impact on the environment.

HANNA GRENE
SENIOR GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS MANAGER - CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

Following the passage of California Assembly Bill 802 (Williams) in late 2015, Hanna pulled together a diverse group of stakeholders from local governments, environment and energy nonprofits, industry associations, commercial real estate, and multifamily housing representatives to create the California Benchmarking Collaborative. The CA Benchmarking Collaborative has shaped the first statewide, time-certain benchmarking program through many rounds of in-depth comments, technical advice, and advocacy in 2016.

VEENA MUTHUSAMY
MANAGE, CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY - CUSHMAN & WAKEFIELD

Veena executed the admirable task of nudging C&W towards adopting WELL and LEED certifications across the rollout of a national office restack as well as educating the Facility Mgmt division on the technologies that underpin these certifications.

EILEEN QUIGLEY
SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER - NATURAL RESOURCE DEFENSE COUNCIL

4 years ago, with their Chicago office renovation, Eileen lead the initiative to explore the possibility of aiming for Living Building Challenge certification program that had not yet been pursued for any commercial tenant improvement space. As a result, the Natural Resource Defense Council Chicago Office achieved Petal Certification with the Materials Petal and became the first space to achieve any LBC certification. That project opened the market of LBC projects for tenant improvement spaces. Since then, she's managed 3 more LBC office projects for NRDC, one of which became the first in China and another to be the first under the newer 3.0 standard. Many other organizations pursued LBC for their offices since then.
